Purpose:
The Garage is a student, educator, and community created makerspace in the Kingsford Middle School. Over a week long process, these stakeholders will revamp an area to meet the needs of learners within the building. This makerspace will be open to all educators at Kingsford Middle School and be a spot for community pop-up training sessions.
Creation Process:
The week following the last day of school, incoming 5th graders through incoming 8th graders will be invited to come and transform a space at KMS into a makerspace. Prior to that date we will ask the community for donations of supplies and equipment they may have around their homes and or businesses that could be used in the makerspace. Examples of supplies and equipment would be peg boards, wood, hand tools, matte black paint, casters, hooks, sewing machines, cricut/die cut type machines, and anything else that might be utilized by students.
During the week of creating an area that will be known as The Garage, students, educators, and community members will work hand-in-hand to setup the makerspace using the donated supplies.
On-Going:
Community members will be invited in to train students and staff on machines and tools that are donated. Students and educators who attend these trainings be receive ‘endorsements’ for the tool and/or machine. With these endorsements, they can become trainers for other students/educators.
Once a year we will also hold a makerspace supply drive. During that drive, we will invite the community to help us restock with supplies, tools, machines, and anything else they feel can benefit The Garage.
