Purpose
We believe that children prosper best when they can be in class with their peers. Online education has its uses, but research shows that kids do better in a classroom setting. This is why our districts, Breitung Township Schools, North Dickinson County School, and Norway-Vulcan Area SchoolsVulcan are collaborating to pilot a program in which students will have the opportunity to attend classes across district boundaries.
Our communities are special places that offer lifestyles unique to anywhere else. Families can choose to live in town, on a farm, on a lake, or in the woods. Few areas offer such an array of choices in a similar sized area. At the same time, having acres or even miles between homes usually limits what schools can offer in their buildings. Our goal is to help kids have access to a wide array of classes regardless of whether they are in a large or small district.
Implementation
Administrative teams from all three districts have spent time together planning what to offer. Schools have aligned their schedules and transportation routes in order to accommodate students. In our first year, beginning in the fall of 2017-18, we will be offering classes such as A.P. Calculus, Foods, Art 2-4, Computer Aided Design, Current Events, A.P. Computer Science, Spanish 3 & 4, and Advanced Anatomy.
As an added bonus, having students from across our locales attend classes with one another will strengthen the ties between our communities. For students, getting to attend classes and having to work with new peers will prepare them for adapting to new locations and new friends once they leave high school.
We are very excited to bring this collaboration to you and to all of the families in our districts. If you have high school aged students, please encourage them to consider these opportunities.
